Sustainability Efforts
We have prioritized environmental sustainability when designing and building our new facilities. We are proud to share with you some of the features of our dive center and accommodations that take steps towards protecting our planet and its resources.
Creating our purpose-built dive facilities from scratch has been a learning experience for us and we know we still have more work to do. Ultimately, our goal for the future is to be a fully carbon neutral dive operation.
In the meantime, here are some features that will help our dive center to be more sustainable.
RENEWABLE ENERGY
We will have solar panels so that Playa del Carmen’s abundant sunshine can generate enough power for our classrooms, pool, accommodation and compressor. Any excess energy will be fed back to the national grid.
SALT-WATER SYSTEM FOR OUR POOL
Instead of buying chlorine to add to our training pool, we will have a system where simple salt is used to generate its own chlorine. This will be gentler on our skin, as well as our scuba equipment! And we won’t need lots of concentrated chemicals to be manufactured for our pool.
RAINWATER HARVESTING
A few years ago we bought some rain barrels in our home which we used to water our plants. Playa del Carmen gets a good amount of rain and we found that these rain buckets met our plants’ watering needs most of the year.
With our dive facilities we will take this a step further. We will have a rainwater harvesting system to use the natural rainwater when we can. This will be used to top-up the pool as well as for our bathrooms. Furthermore, all our bathrooms and showers will be fitted with water-saving fixtures.
The Go Pro Family's Efforts to Protect The Ocean
As a dive center committed to sustainable dive travel, we focus on reducing our environmental impact while offering incredible experiences.
And while we’re proud of our eco-friendly efforts, we know there’s always more to do. Our focus is on action, not just checking boxes, which is why we’re excited to share some of the ways we’re making a difference on our sustainability journey.
Construction Updates
May 2024
It’s all hands on deck this month, trying to put the finishing touches to our dive center so that we can fully open on 1st June. We have the carpenter preparing our kitchens and shelving, plumber fitting the bathrooms, and the windows are already installed. Our smaller classroom on the ground floor is already finished and the rooms on the first floor are almost done. The pool is full and we’re getting it cristal clear and ready for use.

February 2024
This month the pool concrete was poured (it still looks huge!). The classrooms are also coming together with the plasterers working hard. The workers are also getting the kitchen and bathrooms prepared so that they can start installing the fixtures soon.
We’re looking forward to sharing more photos with you next month, along with – hopefully – an opening date!
December 2023
Things are definitely taking shape now, with most of the building work done. Next will be installation of plumbing and electrical work and of course more work on the pool.
The workers will be taking a well-deserved break over the Christmas holidays, and we are looking forward to see more developments in the new year.
Three things we learnt this month:
- Concrete is expensive!
- The pool looks HUGE. Plenty of space for all our divers
- We are fortunate to have such a great team of workers, contractors and architects on this project.
November 2023
It’s not pretty but it’s progress!
The builders have made significant progress on the ground floor and first floor levels, where most of the walls have been erected. The project is advancing smoothly, and we’re excited about the developments taking shape. We had a lot of rain in the last couple of weeks but it didn’t slow us down too much.
We are hoping to have Phase One ready for use in Spring 2024!
Stay tuned for more updates.
October 2023
After meticulous planning and preparation, we’ve obtained the necessary permissions to commence construction. The excavation for the pool began in early September, and within six weeks, substantial progress has been made, as seen in this photo. We’re thrilled with the swift pace of our project.
While we can’t provide an exact opening date for Phase One just yet, stay tuned for updates. Be assured, you’ll be the first to know as we continue this exciting journey. Thank you for your interest and support!
