Cenote Diving in Playa del Carmen
– Dive into Another World –
There is nowhere quite like a cenote. Crystal-clear freshwater, ancient limestone formations, ethereal beams of light piercing the darkness — cenote diving in the Riviera Maya is one of the most breathtaking underwater experiences on the planet, and Playa del Carmen puts you right at the heart of it.
At The Go Pro Family, we offer guided cenote fun dives for certified divers of all experience levels. Whether it’s your first time in a cenote or you’re returning to explore a new system, our experienced guides will take care of everything so you can focus on the magic.
What is Cenote Diving?
Cenotes are natural sinkholes filled with crystal-clear freshwater, connected to a vast underground river system that runs beneath the Yucatán Peninsula. The Riviera Maya is home to thousands of cenotes — many of them within easy driving distance of Playa del Carmen — making this one of the best cenote diving destinations in the world.
Diving in a cenote is a completely different experience to ocean diving. The visibility is extraordinary — often 30 metres or more. The water temperature is a constant, comfortable 25°C year-round. And the formations you’ll encounter — stalactites, stalagmites, haloclines, and ancient fossils — have been forming for thousands of years.
Most cenote dives are cavern dives, meaning you always remain within the natural light zone and never lose sight of the entrance. No cave diving certification is required for our fun dives — just a valid Open Water certification or above and good buoyancy control.

Who Can Go Cenote Diving?
Cenote diving with The Go Pro Family is open to any certified diver with a PADI Open Water certification or equivalent (from any agency). You don’t need cave diving experience or any specialist certification — our guides handle all navigation and safety.
We recommend that you have completed at least a few dives since your certification, and that you are comfortable with buoyancy. If it has been a long time since your last dive, we can arrange a quick refresher before your cenote experience.
Not yet certified? Our PADI Open Water Course will have you dive-ready in as little as 3 days — and a cenote dive is the perfect way to celebrate your new certification.
Freediving in Cenotes
Cenotes are also one of the world’s finest freediving environments — and this is something we know particularly well at The Go Pro Family. The calm, clear water, consistent temperature and stunning surroundings make the cenotes an extraordinary place to learn or improve your freediving.
If you’d like to explore the cenotes on a single breath rather than with a tank, take a look at our PADI Freediving Courses — taught in some beautiful cenotes by our experienced freediving instructor.
FAQs
Read on to find answers to our Frequently Asked Questions about cenote diving from Playa del Carmen with The Go Pro Family.
No. Our cenote fun dives are guided cavern dives, which means you always remain within the natural light zone. A standard Open Water certification is all you need for many cenotes.
We recommend a swimsuit, towel, refillable water bottle, and a sense of adventure. We’ll take care of everything else.
You will be asked to shower to wash off all lotions, make-up, hair products, sunscreens and insect repellant before diving in the cenotes, so we recommend not to apply any until after you have been diving.
While diving in any environment comes with inherent risks, these risks are low when it is done with experienced guides following proper safety protocols. All our guides are Full Cave-certified, experienced in the local systems, and keep groups small (maximum 4 divers per guide) so everyone is looked after.
Being based in Playa del Carmen means that we can choose to travel north or south to visit the full selection of impressive cenotes. Most of the cenotes we visit are between 35 and 80 minutes from our dive center. Transport is included in your dive package.
Many of our cenote dive sites are wide, open caverns with plenty of natural light — not narrow tunnels. Tell us if you have any concerns and we’ll choose a site that feels comfortable for you. Many divers who were nervous beforehand say it was the highlight of their trip.
A halocline is the point where freshwater and saltwater meet — creating a blurry, almost liquid-mirror effect that you swim through. It’s one of the most surreal things you’ll ever see underwater, and the cenotes are one of the few places in the world where you can experience it as a diver.
